Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start 11th for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 600-mile event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Earnhardt Jr.’s new-look black and camouflage National Guard Chevrolet posted a lap of 27.915 seconds (193.444 mph) around the 1.5-mile quad-oval.

“I think we could have run a little better,” Earnhardt Jr. told reporters after his lap. “I didn’t realize the track was in as good of shape as it was. I gave up a little bit of speed the first half of the lap. The car drove good. The second half of the lap the speed was there. The drivability was pretty good in the car.”

Denny Hamlin blazed a new track-record lap of 27.604 seconds (195.624 mph) bettering Kurt Busch for the pole award. Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin and Clint Bowyer made up the top five. Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray and Ryan Newman complete the top 10.

Teams will return to the track for a pair of practice sessions Saturday at 10 a.m. ET and 1 p.m. ET.

Coverage of Sunday’s 600-mile, 400-lap event begins at 5:30 p.m. ET on Fox.
