Dale Earnhardt Jr. notched a seventh-place finish in the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Earnhardt Jr.’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson picked up his record fourth victory in the All-Star event.

Racing forward from his 15th-place starting position, the No. 88 National Guard Chevrolet served notice as a strong contender in the opening 20-lap segment. Earnhardt Jr. moved up five positions at the conclusion of the opening segment to 10th. The No. 88 ride posted another 10th-place finish in the second segment as well.

After crew chief Steve Letarte chose to change only right-side tires on Earnhardt Jr.’s car between the second and third segments, the No. 88 mounted a strong charge to finish fourth. Despite continuously moving forward, Earnhardt Jr. battled a tight race car for the duration of the event.

Quick pit work by the National Guard crew following the third segment sent Dale Jr. back on the track sixth overall but second of the drivers that received four fresh tires. On the restart, Kyle Busch’s No. 18 car wiggled in turn two causing Earnhardt Jr. to lift, allowing several cars to bypass the pair. Several laps later, Earnhardt Jr. received minor damage after contact from Greg Biffle. The resulting damage and continued ill-handling condition forced Letarte to call Earnhardt Jr. for another two-tire pit stop at lap 67. Earnhardt Jr. ended the fourth segment 11th.

Earnhardt Jr. entered the pits eighth for a mandatory four-tire pit stop between the fourth and fifth segments. His position was determined by an average of his finishes from each of the four segments.

The No. 88 Chevrolet took the green flag ninth for the 10 lap dash to the checkered flag and Earnhardt Jr. was only able to work his way to seventh by race’s end.
