Dale Earnhardt Jr. will roll off 19th in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 Sunday afternoon at Sonoma Raceway. Earnhardt Jr.’s No. 88 Diet Mountain Dew/National Guard Chevrolet recorded a lap of 94.026 mph (76.192 sec.). For the second consecutive week, Marcos Ambrose won the Coors Light Pole Award with a fast lap of 95.262 mph (75.203 sec.) around the 1.99-mile road course. Joining Ambrose on the front row will be Dale Jr.’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon.
“The car was pretty comfortable. I think I was too conservative with my driving,” Earnhardt Jr. told reporters after his lap. “We feel like we’ve got good speed. I want to make the car quite a bit more comfortable than it is, so I’m looking forward to practice and I’m ready to go back to work, getting in the car and running some laps.”
Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle and Martin Truex Jr. make up the top five for Sunday’s 110-lap race. Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman complete the top 10.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams will be on the track for a pair of practice sessions Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET and 1:45 p.m. ET. Both sessions will be broadcast on Speed, with the latter being shown on tape-delay at 11 p.m. ET.
Coverage of Sunday’s race begins at 3 p.m. ET on TNT.
