Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start eighth in Sunday’s Pocono 400 presented by #NASCAR after turning a lap of 177.939 mph (50.579 sec.) around the 2.5-mile tri-oval. Earnhardt Jr. was among 36 different drivers to shatter the previous track record set in 2004. Joey Logano laid down a blistering speed of 179.598 mph (50.112 sec.) to win the Coors Light Pole award.
"I feel good about our car. We’re just ready to get the race started and we’re ready to race since we’ve been here so long," Earnhardt Jr. told reporters after making his qualifying run. "It’s been a lot longer than necessary to get ready for this race and get this track ready and I’m just ready to go. My car has been good. It’s been real good speed-wise."
Logano is joined on row one by Carl Edwards, with Paul Menard, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin making up the remainder of the top five. Mark Martin, Regan Smith, Earnhardt Jr., Marcos Ambrose and Kasey Kahne filled the top 10.
Coverage of Sunday’s race begins at 12 p.m. ET on TNT.
