As he did in 2003, Dale Jr. started his Daytona Speedweeks off with two wins right out of the gate, first claiming the checkered flag in the Budweiser Shootout and following suit with a victory in the Gatorade Duel qualifying race five days later. This was no easy feat, as Junior started his No. 88 AMP Energy / National Guard Chevrolet in the back due to an engine change. It took only 18 laps to get to the front, and his ability to stay in the lead pack set him up for a pass of leader Ryan Newman with 10 laps to go. A late caution set the field for a two-lap dash to the checkers. Second-place Reid Sorenson drafted with Junior, and the two broke away to a large lead. Sorenson could never mount a charge on his own, and Junior claimed his second win of the 2008 Daytona Speedweeks.
