It was the debut of a new team, new number, and new sponsors for Dale Jr., yet it was the same old result that Earnhardt fans had come to know and love at Daytona. In his first official race in the No. 88 AMP Energy / National Guard Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, Junior entered the new era with a victory in the 2008 season-opening Budweiser Shootout. He led a record-setting 47 of 70 laps, yet he still needed a last-lap pass of Tony Stewart to earn the victory. Dale Jr.'s pass came with drafting help from his new teammate Jimmie Johnson. "We had a lot of help from Jimmie, and that really was half the credit to the win," Junior said. "The other half was the car being capable of being up there in the first place."
